Can you frame a puzzle without gluing it? Technically, yes, but we strongly advise against it. Unglued puzzles can shift during the framing process or while hanging, potentially falling apart inside the frame. Several team members experimented with using pressure-sensitive adhesive applied to puzzle backs, which showed promise for temporary displays. However, for any puzzle you plan to hang long-term, proper gluing remains the best approach.
Do puzzle dimensions on boxes match reality? Not always. We measured dozens of completed puzzles throughout testing and found variations between stated and actual sizes surprisingly common. Measurements typically stayed within a quarter inch of listed specifications, but that small difference matters when ordering frames. Always measure your completed puzzle before purchasing a frame.
Can you use regular picture frames for puzzles? Sometimes. The limiting factor is usually depth. Most standard picture frames accommodate thickness up to 1/8 inch comfortably, which works for many modern cardboard puzzles. However, premium puzzles or wooden puzzles often exceed this thickness. Additionally, picture frames might lack the structural support needed for larger puzzle sizes. We successfully used picture frames for smaller puzzles during testing, but encountered fitting issues with anything over 1000 pieces.
How do you prevent puzzle colors from fading? UV protection makes the biggest difference. Frames with UV-resistant acrylic glazing significantly outperformed standard options in our fade testing. Additionally, avoid hanging puzzles in direct sunlight regardless of glazing type. Even the best UV protection only slows fading rather than preventing it entirely.
